What are YOU doing to recession-proof your Voice Over Career? YOUR comments.

February 18th, 2009 Posted in Finding Work, Marketing

It’s Wednesday, and time to hear from YOU, the voice over talent about how you and your voice over career are doing in these crazy, uncertain economic times. I believe there are silver linings when life hands us a whole bunch of lemons. It’s an opportunity to reinvent ourselves and rethink our careers and maybe even find voice over success. Part of what we need to do is reach out and connect with each other. It is all about relationships in the end. Each week I’m profiling one of you who answers the question, “What are you doing to recession-proof your voice over career?”

This week, Bob Souer, of the Voiceover Boblog (a MUST read!) had this response:

“I just booked the promo voice for the History Detectives show. Our first session is next week. I did a session for 4 national television commercials for a health insurance company earlier this week. Did a few web site narrations for a Canadian client yesterday. Another company emailed earlier this week that they have 3 short web narrations for me to do sometime tomorrow. I just finished two small eLearning projects for one company and I have a large eLearning project for another company that I’m working on right now.

I’m pretty sure there’s no such thing as “recession-proofing” one’s voiceover business. Everyone is going to have some ups and downs; but here’s a quick thought for you.

One critical key for doing well in the long term is to avoid putting all of one’s eggs in a single basket. If a voice actor is doing a ton of commercials and not much else, that’s maybe a voice actor who will go through some lean times in the next year or two.

Those of us who do some commercials, some documentaries, some imaging, some promos, some corporate, some eLearning, some audiobooks? I think we’ll all be OK as long as we continue to work hard at our craft. Work hard at exceeding the expectations of our clients. Work hard at always raising ourselves to the next level in our work.”
