After President Obama’s address to Congress last night, it’s pretty clear that times continue to be tough, but there is hope. It’s also clear it’s time for reinvention. So, each Wednesday, we’re profiling one voice actor who shares what they’re doing to keep their voice over career going. Thanks for your great responses! WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! LET US KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING!

Here’s what Kara Edwards had to say:

“This is a very timely blog! So many of my friends have lost their jobs lately, and it breaks my heart every time I hear about mass lay-offs in the news. While I don’t think that voice over is completely recession proof, I do believe we are more isolated from this crisis that many other businesses. Even in an economic crisis companies must advertise, people still watch cartoons, corporations still need voicemail messages, etc. However, recession-proofing one’s business must take place long before an economic crisis hits.

It’s the strong connections I’ve made with my clients over the past months and years that have kept me busy during what some are calling a ’slow time’. I am beyond thankful to have several regular monthly projects I record and produce. In fact, not only have I not experienced a decline in work- I’ve been thrilled to watch my business flourish! I recently relocated to Florida and took that opportunity to improve many aspects of my studio- such as adding ISDN and several new pieces of audio equipment. This is allowing me to improve what I offer my current clients, and extend my client base in many new directions. I’m also staying on top of my marketing efforts, keeping my website and blog updated as best I can, and networking with as many of my fellow voice actors and potential clients as possible.

Consistency is vital in our business. I believe that it isn’t just important to record a great voice over, it’s equally important to create relationships and pleasant experiences. That’s what keeps my clients coming back, and that’s how I believe I am ‘recession-proofing’ not just my career…but also my life’s passion.”
