Voice Over Work = Networking!
January 21st, 2008 Posted in General Info, MarketingYesterday I was clicking around the net looking for new voice over ideas to blog about and came across Bob Souer’s site. As I scrolled down I saw a blog called, “How Do You Get To Carnegie Hall?” Bob was referencing the VoiceRegistry.com blog and “Voice Over Practice Makes Perfect.” The blog I wrote! Bob went on to write that Dan Nachtrab had told him about the blog. So there it is. Networking at work. And the best way to network is to help others. Keep this in mind when you’re feeling like the voice over world is so competitive. Instead of scrambling to get that next voice over gig, maybe we need to figure out how we can help a fellow voice over actor. Now that’s real networking! By the way, I immediately commented on Bob Souer’s site thanking him for mentioning VoiceRegistry.com and my blog. And I’m writing about Bob and Dan today. You see? It never ends.-Tracy Pattin

You’ve hit on the heart of blogging. Blogging is all about community. Hence such built-in features as Trackbacks which allow you to back link to someone else’s blog. And blogrolls, which are links to other people’s blogs.
And this Voice-over community really is a community. Bob Souer is a friend of mine and I would never consider him a competitor. Why? Because his voice isn’t mine (and is very different from mine). And if a client wants my voice, they’ll hire me, just as Bob’s clients were looking for the voice that Bob specifically brings.
There may only be X amount of jobs out there, but if you are the voice that the client is looking for (and you make the client aware of it), then the “competition” doesn’t matter so much.

Tracy,
Your main point about networking by finding ways to help others is so key. The single biggest reason I like blogging is because it has turned out to be such an excellent way to be of service to others.
And my friend Jeffrey has expressed my thoughts exactly on the question of competition. I’m the world exclusive source for voiceovers by Bob Souer. Jeffrey is the same for voiceovers by Jeffrey Kafer. You are the same for voiceovers by Tracy Pattin. My friend Dan Nachtrab, again the same deal. There is no real competition in voiceover work.
Thanks for the excellent blog. I’ll be back, often.
Be well,
Bob

Hi Tracy,
Your podcast with Bill Holmes was excellent and was worth spreading word about it to my friends. I wish you continued growth and success with your blog. I am already a regular reader.
Take care,
Dan

Tracy:
Thanks so much for the podcast and the blog about networking. What would we do without this phenomenal marketing tool? Probably wouldn’t be where we are now. Okay…yes, maybe our dedication and drive brought us to where we are today. That’s a big part of success in any field. But it’s also safe to say that somewhere at some time - someone - whom you may know, or may not know…heard your work, took the time to get the word out about your work, or perhaps took some time to personally give you direction and/or guidance. So now, there’s plenty of opportunities for you to keep the momentum going. And with that in mind, take some time out of the studio today. Find a blog. Pick up the phone. Network. Connect.

Tracy,
I too have a blog and heard about this site through Voicebank. I was immediately drawn to the headline of this post and was most gratified see that my friends, Bob and Jeff (who also have blogs) commenting. Blogging is a great way to network and to reach out from our solo work existences to connect, help, share, educate, or speak our minds.
So glad I stopped by. I’ll be back, too.
All the Best,
