To Demo or Not to Demo? What’s in a Great One?

May 21st, 2008 Posted in General Info, Marketing

Seems like it’s a fairly easy answer, but Amber at Voicebank.net gets this question constantly. So, what makes a great demo? Should we have several demos for all the voice over categories? Or should we even have demos at all these days? Should we just have a series of MP3s?

So, first the demo question. If you’re going the demo route, the first thing to do is check out what the successful voice talent does. One way is to go to Voicebank.net and listen (for free) to all those demos. All of the demos on Voicebank.net are listed by talent agencies and therefore belong to professional talent who have representation. Then consulting and/or hiring a demo producer is a good next step. Remember, you only get one chance to make that first impression, and if your VO demo isn’t top notch, neither will your VO representation be and voice over opportunities.

Stay tuned for my upcoming Q&A blog posts with demo producers on what they do to create great demos that get you represented and hired.

It’s always worth remembering that demo producers are experts in the obvious.

“How do you play the flute?”

“Blow in one end and move your finger up and down the keys on the outside” Mr Demo-King replies. Now I’ve revealed the secret are you going to buy a flute and get gigs as a session musician?
