Once was Enough…Meeting the Songwriters from “Once”

February 28th, 2008 Posted in General Info

The other day, I had just finished my one-to-one class (to perfect my podcasting skills) at The Apple Store at the Beverly Center in LA. There they were shopping for laptops a few feet away. Last time I saw Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova was on a flat screen TV 2 days before winning their Oscar for best song for the movie “Once.” This was my chance to interview them! I had my in-the-field H2 Zoom recording device in my bag ready to go. No, I better not. But it would make a great podcast for Voice Registry. After all they use their voices too… As I walked out, something tugged at me. Take a risk! But I just kept walking through the mall to the elevators. That tug was still there. Take a risk! So, I turned around, walked back towards The Apple Store. Maybe they’ll just walk out. That would be perfect! I got all the way up to the store and started to turn around, and there they were, walking out the door. I took the risk, went up and congratulated them and asked for a quick podcast interview. They turned me down. They’d been doing interviews for 2 days and were exhausted. They were very nice about the whole thing, although I did think how great it would have been to give me a chance as someone did for them.

I walked away so glad I took that chance. For some reason it was enough. Then I thought of one of the first blog posts I wrote called, “Voice Over Success is When Opportunity Meets Preparedness.” No matter what we want, we have to be ready for that moment, prepared for the opportunity. The outcome doesn’t matter, it’s taking the risk that does. And who knows? Maybe one day we’ll get our our own “Academy Award” or voice over gig!
