Doing Voice Overs Against All Odds

April 16th, 2009 Posted in General Info, Marketing

When you first see him you can’t tell. Just your typical voice actor in LA, going to his next voice over job. Trev Broudy is a young, fit guy, with piercing blue eyes, walking with his Golden Retriever. When he talks to you he makes eye contact. But then when you look a little closer, you’ll notice his dog is no ordinary dog. He’s always at Trev’s right, helping him to navigate LA’s busy streets and chaotic world. Riggs is a seeing eye dog. Trev is visually impaired. He can’t drive, he can’t read, but he can do voice overs. I had the opportunity to meet and interview him the other day for a podcast.

It was September 2002. Trev was in West Hollywood with a friend, about to get into their car to go home after a night out. Then suddenly a group of guys came up with a baseball bat, hitting him on the head repeatedly, leaving him bleeding and dying. It was a hate crime.

Trev spent the next months in the hospital clinging to life, brain damaged and in a coma. When he came out of the coma, he was left with only his peripheral vision. When he looks straight ahead it’s a black hole. He can only see slivers off to the side.

Through sheer determination and some great software, Trev was able to resume his voice over career. Find out how Trev does it in my upcoming podcast in May.
