Dahlin’s Diary - Breaking Into the Voice Over Industry
January 5th, 2008 Posted in General Info, Marketing, Voice Over InstructionHi there! Welcome! I’m Amber Dahlin and have worked for Voicebank.net since 1999 and wow, has the voice over industry changed a lot since then, or what?! I’ve seen the way VO talent market themselves change so much. Nearly a decade ago, I saw boxes of unopened demo CDs (and even some cassette tapes!) from some Los Angeles Talent Agencies. The marketing methods and tools of that time (the days of walking demos into Agencies and mailing fancy demo packages) have been replaced by email-able MP3 files and personal websites. The Internet has truly revolutionized this industry. I am very excited to share my knowledge with you about how to market yourself successfully in today’s industry. A voice over demo is an absolutely essential voice over marketing tool as it is largely your demo that will reveal your talent to potential agents and buyers. So, for those of you who don’t have a VO demo yet and are interested in doing voice overs, my advice is to listen to the VO demos on Voicebank.net. Listening is free and easy! Simply CLICK HERE and then click on a Talent Agency’s name. You’ll then see folders that organize the various demos by gender and specific categories such as Commercials, Promos, Narration, Audio Books, Radio Imaging, Trailers, etc. Enjoy listening and learning what a VO demo sounds like! And, just think…by listening to the demos, you will have taken a big step toward preparing yourself for breaking into this highly competitive industry! And, one more thing…if you haven’t already, I encourage you to check out Tracy Pattin’s first blog post titled Voice Over Success is when opportunity meets preparedness. Thanks for reading and I look forward to your comments!

thank you for providing another most welcome resource…and thanks to bob souer for pointing some of us to it quickly!
if i might beg a point for the future: the thing that got me most hungry for more information in your inaugural post was the part about getting that newfangled email-delivered demo “out there”. i’ve fully embraced the concept and am frankly relieved that i don’t have to be restricted to physical cds and actual proximity to a casting office to find work.
but it’s this “out there” that continually stops me in my promotional tracks.
in future posts, i’d love to know more about the actual nuts-and-bolts of this “out there” and the specific steps to properly put my voice in front of the right ears.
again, thank you for what looks to be another one of my daily must-read internet sites.
