Networking Means Connecting

January 23rd, 2008 Posted in General Info, Marketing

Donna Reed, a voice talent in New York wrote a great comment about Mondays’s blog : “Voice Work= Networking.” So much so I have to blog about her blogging about it! The need for networking seems to resonate for a lot of people. Is it because we as voice actors are feeling isolated these days due to the amazing growth of technology? It’s ironic, isn’t it? Today, we can connect more quickly and easily than ever before, yet on some level we seem to feel disconnected. So many voice actors work out of their home studios/set-ups sending auditions to their agents across the country. And they’ve probably never met most of them! So, networking whether on the internet or on the rare occasion, face to face (what a concept!) must be kept alive and well. Blogging is a great way to create a more personal connection. Hey Donna! Thanks for your very poignant comments : “Thanks so much for the podcast and the blog about networking. What would we do without this phenomenal marketing tool? Probably wouldn’t be where we are now. Okay…yes, maybe our dedication and drive brought us to where we are today. That’s a big part of success in any field. But it’s also safe to say that somewhere at some time - someone - whom you may know, or may not know…heard your work, took the time to get the word out about your work, or perhaps took some time to personally give you direction and/or guidance. So now, there’s plenty of opportunities for you to keep the momentum going. And with that in mind, take some time out of the studio today. Find a blog. Pick up the phone. Network. Connect.” Check out Donna Reed’s website and say (or write!) hi!-Tracy Pattin

Great Advice about networking Tracy! I had a 40 minute conversation last week with a friend who has been (and continues to be) very successful in VO in a smaller market. He continues to network constantly to “major market” producers in LA, NY, and Chicago all the time. The seeds that get planted from his constant contact are a big reason for his success! He says his secret to good networking is being real with those he contacts. Being a salesman and trying too hard to get VO work directly from a producer is a sure fire way to turn anyone off.
