Bill Applebaum worked and studied Improvisation in Chicago with Del Close and Paul Sills. He worked onstage as a writer/performer at The Second City Theater in Chicago. Bill founded the Actors Improv Studio in Los Angeles and has been teaching Improv for the last 15 years. The Actors Improv Studio has a unique approach to improv these days that focuses on how improv helps people become better actors (and voice actors) by tapping into their creativity and not by being clever. It comes directly from those he studied with. Improv classes at Compost Productions start July 7th.

    loved this podcast, and love bill applebaum’s classes. he really is the best teacher, if you haven’t tried him, you must.
    it was great to be reminded about listening (what?), it’s such an important element of improv and really all acting i think. and such an easy guideline to forget for some reason. probably for me, it’s my enormous ego that gets in my listening way.
    i think bill should have a theater. or theatre. whichever he prefers.

    Bill & Tracy,
    Excellent points about listening & why listening helps you to ‘get out of your own way’. It really frees you up to tap into your creativity because you’re not busy ‘thinking’ about what you’ll say next but rather you go with the flow and that’s where you’ll find the truth of the scene. And gibberish helps by freeing you up from ‘dialogue’ or trying to be funny with your words. See, Bill….you learned me good! And Tracy, great interview with one of the best teachers out there. Keep up the great work!
